6 Ways to Help Prevent Acne Breakouts

June is Acne Awareness Month so there’s no better time to talk about acne and how to prevent and treat it.
Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting more than 50 million people every year. While helping to control and prevent acne requires a targeted skincare regimen, there are also some simple, everyday steps you can take to help keep breakouts at bay.
MAKEUP BRUSHES
Makeup brushes are a magnet for dead skin cells, oil, and dirt. Wash your makeup brushes with a cleanser or mild soap and rinse until the water runs clear. Squeeze out excess water and dry flat on a paper towel.
PILLOWCASES
If you find you’re breaking out mainly on one side of your face (and you’re a side sleeper), your pillowcase could be the culprit. Dirt and oil can build up on your pillowcase and lead to clogged pores. Change your pillowcases often. You may also want to try reducing the amount of laundry detergent you use or try a gentler detergent, which may be less irritating to your skin.
MOBILE PHONES
It’s known as “tech-ne”—acne brought on by a tech device, such as your mobile phone. Your phone can pick up dirt from your hands, your bag, the kitchen counter, and other surfaces, which can then get transferred to your face. Clean your phone often with antibacterial wipes or rubbing alcohol and hold it away from the side of your face—or stick to headphones or ear pods.
YOUR HANDS
If your skin is pimple-prone, keep your hands as clean as possible and do your best to not touch your face.
YOUR HAIR
Much like your hands, keeping your hair clean is key to helping prevent breakouts.
THE SUN
Limit your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Apply SPF—our SUN VEIL™ SPF 30 or MONAT BB Cream SPF 40™ are great choices—at least 20 minutes before sun exposure.
If you’re looking for products to help with your breakouts, we have the MONAT BE CLARIFIED™ System. Powered by proven acne-fighting ingredients including salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, it’s an advanced solution that not only treats acne breakouts but can also help prevent them.
