Changing The Winter Blahs Into The Winter Aahhhs!

You started off the New Year with lofty goals and boundless enthusiasm but the end of February is now here and you might easily find your inspiration lacking.

Research shows that the February blues tend to be a result of the lull that occurs about now after the festivities of the New Year. From November to January 1st there is a lot to look forward to but then abruptly it seems to end. And for those who live in the cold north, motivation may be waning after months of being trapped indoors.

The winter blues affect mood, can dampen social life and impact work productivity. What to do?

Maximize Your Exposure to Natural Light. Don’t let below-freezing temperatures cause your productivity and mood to plummet. Light enters the brain through the eyes and impacts serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that play a role in boosting mood.

Sitting next to an artificial light—also called a light box—for 30 minutes per day can be as effective as antidepressant medication! Opening blinds and curtains, trimming back tree branches, and sitting closer to windows also can help provide an extra dose of sunshine.

Simulate Dawn. People with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression that usually begins in late fall or early winter and fades as the weather improves, may feel depressed, irritable, lethargic and have trouble waking up in the morning—especially when it’s still dark out.

Studies show that a dawn simulator, a device that causes the lights in your bedroom to gradually brighten over a set period of time, can serve as an antidepressant and make it easier to get out of bed.

Get Your Heart Pumping. Exercising under bright lights can help seasonal depression. New research found that exercise under bright light improved general mental health, social functioning, depressive symptoms and vitality, while exercising in ordinary light improved vitality only.

Change Your Winter Attitude. The key to changing your mood is to alter your attitude about winter. Instead of seeing it as a long, never-ending season, try to see it as an opportunity to do things that can only be done in the winter. Take up skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowshoeing or ice skating and you’ll quickly see your winter mood warm up.

Get Outside. Talking yourself into taking a walk when the temperatures plummet isn’t easy, but the benefits are big: Spending time outside (even when it's chilly!) can improve focus, reduce symptoms of SAD, and lower stress levels.

Valentine’s Day is for Everyone

heartv2

Valentine’s Day is around the corner. You can’t miss it. Hearts and red Valentine-shaped boxes of candy are everywhere. Advertisements of love and gift-giving between couples come at us from every corner. Stores fill their windows with “gifts of love.” It’s a hard time to be single…in the U.S.

This year, why not try a new approach? In some countries, Valentine’s Day is focused more on celebrating friendships than romantic relationships, making this holiday more inclusive… and fun!

In Finland, its 5.4 million inhabitants celebrate “Friend's Day”, which is more about remembering all friends and showing true camaraderie rather than focusing solely on romance.

In Guatemala, it is known as “Día del Amor y la Amistad” (Day of Love and Friendship) and many simply demonstrate their appreciation for their friends and peers.

So if you’re single and this day of the year makes you feel left out or sad, take a hint from other cultures!

Give your BFFs cards and flowers or take them out to dinner. Guys can get together and watch basketball or hockey. It doesn’t have to be a day meant only for couples; gather round with your friends… It can be whatever you make it, as long as you share the love!

January is Self-Love Month: Why It’s Important

Did you know January was self-love month? What a wonderful way to start off the year! Why? Because self-love is the key to having solid self-esteem and real happiness. It’s hard to have either of those without it.

It’s easy to encourage people to “love yourself” more because it sounds nice, but it’s hard to just magically wake up one morning and decide to love YOURself.

Self-love doesn’t just happen! Self-love is about developing your capacity to be more aware, authentic and intentional in every aspect of your life. By doing so, you’ll build greater self-compassion and also enhance your ability to be more compassionate with others, which in turn brings peace and harmony to your own life.

When you practice self-love, you are continually naming and claiming all of who you are — even the scariest parts. Self-love is vastly important for any person in any walk of life. If you want to evolve as a person, you have to start with self-love first. It is the foundation for everything beautiful in life, including meaningful and healthy relationships, having a positive attitude and body image, and achieving your dreams.

Every self-help book pushes building self-love but, unfortunately, many people still don’t know how it is done. Well, here’s a start:

Build the Foundation. Lay brick by brick, small loving act by small loving act, towards yourself and towards others. This will bring more smiles to your face, help mend your heart, and generate more things to be grateful for!

Start Right Now. Call a friend who makes you feel good. Buy that lotion you always wanted. Get up and take a short walk. Eat a little healthier at your next meal. Do some relaxation breathing. Give yourself a hug. Say “I love you” in the mirror, even if you don’t mean it–yet!

Take Note… From Yourself. Better yet, for the next 30 days, take a few minutes each day to write down one reason why you love yourself. This forces you to bring clarity to your thoughts and feelings and also captures them for you to revisit later.

Give the gift of SELF-love. You’ll find it will draw profoundly wonderful, joyous and miraculous blessings!

A Positive Time for Change

Ahhh spring...! After a long, cold winter, who couldn’t use a little warmth and sunshine? With the rising temperatures come blooming flowers and lush green plants. Mother Nature transforms as she brings the dormant plant life, well, back to LIFE!

For many of us, this feeling is quite familiar. It’s no coincidence that the word “spring” is also a verb: “to rise, to come into being” and “to jump rapidly upward or forward.” A fresh opportunity to start anew, spring is the beginning of a universal life cycle that inspires —and sometimes pushes—us to change from the inside out.

This is the time to fully enter “the new me” phase, leaving behind the sloth associated with the winter slack and the holiday binging; the time to get active again and prep our bodies for summer... and our own inner selves to take on the world! We look back at the lessons learned, we commit to doing more, being better, and dreaming bigger.

One thing’s for sure: whether you choose to feed your intellect or feed your soul in the pursuit of your goals, you need your body in order to take action! As they say, our body is a temple. We must care for it, cleanse it, and nourish it properly. (Good thing MONAT can help in this area ;).)

What actions will you take to transform this year?

International Women’s Day

International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
Last week we went around the office and asked the men “what does International Women’s Day mean to you?” A few of their responses below.

"If women didn't exist, all the money in the world would have no meaning. Therefore, International Women’s Day should be the #1 International Holiday in the world."

"Women’s day. Isn’t that a made up holiday to get back at men for forgetting Valentine’s Day? #joke. Honestly women are the best. The world is better because of women. Mothers, sisters, grandmas are the best people on the planet. The world is better with the amazing women in our lives. I owe everything to the awesome women in my life, without them my life would be miserable. #realanswer"

"It’s the celebration of a movement; it’s the recognition of women. Personally, it is a day to offer my respect and gratitude to all the special women that have touched my life; But honestly I think there’s no need for an International Women’s Day, we have come a long way since the first International Women’s Day, but still things are the same, domestic violence and equality are still an issue; International Women’s Day should be celebrated every day."

"International Women’s Day means a great deal to me because strong women have surrounded and shaped me all my life. From my Swiss grandmother who came to America in 1948, to my mom who raised four kids as a single mom, and to my own wife, who has endured the ups and downs of life with me for nearly 22 years, I’m a better person because of the strong nurturing of women. And as the father of four distinctly different daughters, I hope I can continue to raise strong women too!"

How will you mark International Women’s Day? Celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women – but don’t forget we still have a long way to go.

MONAT donates to Susan G. Komen

Miami, FL – November 11th, 2014 – In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, MONAT® Global presented a challenge through its Facebook page the last week of October -the company’s official launching month- inviting its community of Market Partners to share a post on their social media, which announced that MONAT would make a donation of $5 to a breast cancer research organization for each “Share”. In just four days –from October 27th to 31st– MONAT counted 441 Shares, which translated into $2,205; the company rounded up the amount to $2,500 and donated the money to the Susan G. Komen® Breast Cancer Foundation.

“Supporting Susan G. Komen as our company’s first charitable effort is very special to us”, expressed Rayner Urdaneta, CEO of MONAT, “as this organization’s outstanding research, educational, and community health initiatives have had an immense impact in the lives of millions of individuals in the U.S. and abroad.” Mr. Urdaneta pointed out that this is a cause dear to their hearts, as they have close loved ones who struggled and survived the disease, including two of their executive team members.

According to Susan G. Komen®, it is estimated that in 2014 there will be 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer among U.S. women and 2,360 among U.S. men. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women in the U.S.

Jillian Corley, Vice President of Marketing for MONAT, explained that it was only natural for the company to partner with an entity that not only works towards finding a cure for breast cancer, but also understands the side effects the disease has on their overall health, including their hair. “MONAT proudly offers safe, naturally-based hair care products that are actually focused on hair strengthening and re-growth”, she said. “Although many might believe that hair is a superficial aspect of beauty, it can actually play an important role in our self-esteem and confidence.”

MONAT addresses external stressors from the environment, weather and exposure to pollutants, as well as the body chemistry that affects hair health and growth. Every MONAT product contains Rejuveniqe™ Oil Intensive, its signature formula that blends key ingredient Abyssinian Oil with 10+ additional all-natural oils that work in harmony to promote hair growth, improve follicle strength, and add luster and vitality. MONAT also incorporates three potent ingredients that promote hair thickening and prevent aging effects on the hair: Capixyl™ (with Red Clover Extract), Procataline™ (with Pea Extract), and Crodasorb™ (UV Absorber).

“We feel honored to be able to partner with Susan G. Komen and look forward to participating with the organization in the future as our MONAT community continues to grow”, concluded MONAT’s President, Stuart MacMillan.
