Volume Hacks for Fine, Thin Hair

Fine, thin hair? We’ve heard so many stylists saying their clients complain more about this than any other hair concern.

Some people are born with fine, thin hair, some develop it with time, and some actually cause it themselves from too much styling abuse!

But there are measures you can take to protect your hair from getting thinner and, instead, plump it out with full luscious volume.

Here are a few suggestions:

Mini Scalp Massages. These stimulate blood flow into the hair follicles and can help strengthen the hair roots and plump up your hair. Simply work a few drops of a lightweight hair treatment, like MONAT’s REJUVENIQE™ Oil Intensive, into your fingertips and rub all over your scalp before you shampoo.

Choose Wisely. Make sure you’re using the right shampoo and conditioner. MONAT’s Volume System cleanses and conditions gently without stripping the hair or leaving unwanted build-up. Its Reshape Root Lifter adds lift at the scalp and makes hair feel thicker and look fuller.

Towel Tips. Gently blot your wet hair with a water-absorbing microfiber towel to avoid roughing up the cuticle. Blowouts are easier, frizz diminishes and, overall, it’s a gentler drying solution for fine, thin hair.

Upside Down You’re Turning Me. Tilt your head to the front and blow dry it upside down. Do the same towards each side, blow drying your hair while tilting your head to the left and then to the right. Voilà! Instant volume.

Moe Hairy and Curly. To instantly give your hair a boost the healthy and heat-free way, add more body, waves and curls with MONAT’s Moxie Magnifying Mousse. Apply it to clean, damp hair, make two large braids and let it dry naturally. Unfurl the plaits, gently rake through your hair with your fingers… Lo and behold sexy, beach waves!

Play the Part. If you always wear your hair parted on one side, switch it to the opposite side. After years of being flattened in the same direction, this will help add lift, body and volume to the top of your head.

Dry Cleaning. Use The Champ Conditioning Dry Shampoo from MONAT on your “off” days to absorb excess oil, dirt and odor, and give your hair extra volume too!

Don’t Forget Your Vitamins. Certain supplements are specifically designed to do wonders for your hair, like MONAT’s S3, an exclusive proprietary blend of clinically proven ingredients that provide a holistic hair boosting treatment from the inside out.

Trending Hairstyles

The traditional blowout doesn’t have to mean stick straight. You can still keep soft, wavy curls when you use the right products as you dry.

When it comes to color, think Bronde – yes, Bronde! A sensual mixture of blonde and brown that moves as your hair moves.

Either way, you stay on trend!

The Voluminous Blowout

Use Revive Shampoo and Revitalize Conditioner. Blot strands with a towel. Spritz Reshape Root Lifter at roots. Apply Moxie Magnifying Mousse throughout.

Using 1½-inch wide hair segments, position medium-size round brush under roots. Blow-dry for shape and shine. Stop short of tips. Tilt and twist brush so hair wraps around it. Focus dryer there briefly and let strands cool before unwinding. Hello, bounce!

Rub a few drops of REJUVENIQE™ Oil Intensive between your hands and slide them through your locks.

Spray The Champ Conditioning Dry Shampoo six inches away and lightly tease strands with your fingers.

Bronde Bombshell

This season is all about going for warmer, richer color tones. Bronde (brown and blonde) is what celebrities are gravitating to this season. This brown base with caramel highlights not only warms up your skin tone, but it also brings dimension and life to your hair.

Can a change of season Change Your Hair?

“The most remarkable discovery in all of astronomy is that the stars are made of atoms of the same kind as those on the earth.” - American physicist Richard Feynman (1918-1988)

For millennia, humans have studied and recorded the universe’s astronomic phenomena and their actual impact on our lives. Scientists agree that solstices, equinoxes, the cycles of the moon, and other celestial events affect the earth and the tides, while spiritual gurus take it further to show how these changes in the heavens affect our bodies, our emotions, our relationships, and even our business plans.

“As above, so below.” – Hermeticism, ancient Greek esoteric wisdom

Whether or not we choose to believe in these influences, chances are that if someone suggests that trimming our hair during a certain astronomic event will help it grow faster and stronger, we might just give it a shot!

The First Day of Fall

An equinox occurs twice a year, in March and in September, marking the beginning of spring and the beginning of fall, respectively. In both cases, day and night are almost of equal duration all over the planet, hence the Latin root of the word: “equi” (equal) and “nox” (night).

As with all events that do not happen every day, today’s is pretty special; the Northern Hemisphere is moving into autumn, while the Southern Hemisphere is emerging from winter into spring. In other words, the seasons are literally changing across our planet today!

What’s it to… your hair?

It depends on what approach you take:

Scientific / Spiritual - This time is geared toward retaining nutrients and storing energy; the blood gets slightly thinner and moves faster, therefore speeding the elimination of toxins. Trimming your hair during this time can be part of that detox process, helping it grow faster, stronger and thicker.

Emotional – Going through a breakup, feeling the need to let go of “baggage”, wanting to change an inner aspect of yourself, looking to call someone’s attention? Cutting your hair can be a cathartic experience and can give you a jump start to new beginnings.

Physical – Changing your look can be the best remedy for boredom. Exploring with a new hairstyle is not a mere superficial resolution, it’s an expression of our identity and can help break the monotony of everyday life!

Whatever resonates with each of us, we can all agree that any day is a good day to give our hair some MONAT TLC! Choose the perfect MONAT product or treatment system for you HERE.

Aging Hair: Stop it in its tracks!

In celebration of Healthy Aging Month we’re here to dish out the dirt on how to help hair stay “forever young.” .

Is your hair thinning? More strands in your comb? Grey hairs started to peek through? These are just some of the signs of aging hair, a reality many men and women are sad to report they’re experiencing.

Good for you these changes can be treated – it just involves changing your daily hair care routine to one that’s more, let’s say, MONATious. ;)

Change in color

That first white strand is a tell-tale sign of aging hair. Hair goes gray when cells stop producing pigment, which is normal and happens naturally with age. While there is no cure for this at the moment, there are treatments you can do to alter the color of your strands temporarily, like dying it with hair dye, or for some, henna.. But there’s nothing wrong with going gray. Take these celebrities for example. Some of them actually love embracing their grey hair. After all, it is a hair color trend for fall!

Change in hair thickness

In case you didn’t know it’s perfectly normal to lose about 100 hairs per day, no matter your age. Hormonal changes in women can affect hair growth patterns as well. It’s not uncommon for menopausal women to experience hair thinning and hair loss. For example, they may notice less hair on their legs but more hair on their upper lip or chin (yikes! I know).

If you’re dealing with thinning hair, or just want naturally luscious and long locks, use MONAT. MONAT products are naturally based, age-prevention hair care products that help with the natural regrowth of hair. MONAT products help hair thrive by using premium, healthy ingredients. Hair Shedding VS Hair Breakage

Now that you’re on your MONAT journey to fabulous hair, are you paying closer attention to your mane? Are you noticing a few hairs on your pillowcase? What about in the shower? Are you worried you might be shedding too much hair? Are you certain it’s shedding and not actually breakage? No need to fret! We’re here to explain the difference between hair shedding and hair breakage.

The Skinny on Hair Shedding
In case you didn’t know, it’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. As stated on the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) website, excessive hair shedding is common in people who have experienced one of the following stressors:

  • Lost 20 pounds or more.
  • Given birth.
  • Lots of stress (Caring for a loved one who is sick, going through a divorce, losing a job).
  • High fever.
  • Undergone an operation.
  • Recovering from an illness.
  • Stopped taking birth-control pills

Most people notice the excessive hair shedding a few months after a stressful event. As your body readjusts, the excessive shedding stops. Within a few months, the hair should regain its normal fullness. And with the help of MONAT’s naturally based, hair treatment systems, you can rest assured knowing you’re doing everything you can to prevent hair loss.

Now About Hair Breakage
When you style your hair, do you notice a lot of short, broken hair strands in the sink or on the floor? If the answer is “yes,” you’re probably experiencing hair breakage. Hair breakage is a result of too much heat styling or chemical damage. Here are a few tips to treat hair breakage:

  • Use Replenish Masque a few times per week (2-3 times is ideal).
  • Stretch your blowout as long as you can, as the natural oils from your scalp are healthy for your hair. If you must wash your hair daily, be sure to treat it with Rejuveniqe to keep the hair follicles coated with hydrating ingredients.
  • When hair is wet, use a naturally based leave-in conditioner like Restore and comb hair gently to avoid breakage.
  • Try to keep chemical salon services limited to one at a time. Multiple chemical services (like coloring and relaxing) is more likely to cause stress on the hair shaft.
  • Over processed hair is brittle. So if you must color process your hair, make sure to add moisture with a regular deep-conditioning regimen.
  • Take a hair supplement like S3, Supplement Support System, to nourish hair from the inside out. Each of the clinically proven ingredients in S3 work together to replenish the body of possible nutrient deficiencies that could be contributing to hair loss and shedding.
  • Avoid heat styling as much as possible.
  • Eat a diet rich in protein. Protein can repair weak spots in the hair shaft, warding off breakage. But be forewarned: Too much protein can make the hair brittle, and too much moisture makes strands too flexible. It's important to find the right balance of moisture and protein.

Sunscreen For Your Skin, MONAT For Your Hair!

Friday, May 27 is National Sunscreen Day, or, as the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention calls it, Don’t Fry Day. Besides damaging the skin, did you know that overexposure to the sun can also cause damage to the hair? That’s a big no-no because our hair serves a very special purpose; it doesn’t just adorn our heads! Hair actually protects us from the heat, the cold, and the sun itself!

Fortunately, MONAT’s products contain Crodasorb™, which helps preserve hair color (natural or chemically treated), and are infused with REJUVENIQE™ Oil, which nourishes every strand with a rich blend of natural botanicals. So rest assured, MONAT has your hair covered (pun intended)! Giving your hair some TLC with MONAT regularly will keep your locks healthier looking and more beautiful all year long.

But remember, sunrays are strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., so avoid exposing your hair and scalp under the direct sunlight during that time slot. Here are a few other useful facts and tips that will help you prevent and heal the harmful effects of sun overexposure.

Quick Facts

  • Direct exposure to our big, bright star can damage healthy, non-chemically treated hair, but coloring or lightening your hair can make it more vulnerable to become weaker, dry and brittle, making it more susceptible to split ends.
  • The sun can also alter your hair’s color. If you’re a brunette and your hair is left unprotected in the sunlight for hours, its color may become lighter or reddish. Bleached or chemically treated hair can yellow, dull and fade.
  • As with the rest of your skin, your scalp can easily be harmed too if exposed directly to the sunlight for prolonged periods. Having said this, covering your scalp will reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.

Quick Tips

  • Leave in plenty of conditioner before enjoying a hot, sunny day at the beach or the pool to avoid losing—and to seal in—your hair’s natural moisture. We recommend MONAT’s Restore Leave-In Conditioner to ensure the delivery of essential nutrients to the scalp and to flaunt more manageable hair; get it here.
  • If you don’t mind putting lotion on your hair and scalp, comb a small amount of sunscreen through your hair and use your fingers to apply directly on your scalp.
  • To provide additional protection, put your hair up in a not-too-tight bun.
  • If you want to completely shelter your mane and scalp, wear a hat. Besides looking stylish, wearing a wide-brimmed hat is also the best way to block the yellow dwarf’s rays from hitting your face and neck.
  • Help repair the damage and keep your hair stronger with a weekly treatment with MONAT’s Replenish Masque! This deep therapy will quench your hair’s thirst, helping it not only restore the moisture lost out in the sun, but also deliver vital nutrients that help eliminate frizz and reduce split ends. Get it here.

Feed Your Hair

Eating healthy not only contributes to weight loss, it also does wonders for your hair. A diet rich in nutrients will help you stay healthy, ageless, and all-around fabulous. So why not give yourself a beauty boost with enhancing nourishments? Below, we’ve outlined some positive nutrition practices to keep in mind for a healthier mane.

Load up on Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are filled with nutrients and a whole lot of water, which helps keep your hair hydrated. Without proper body hydration, your hair will begin to look dry, which can contribute to breakage. Leafy greens also condition and create healthy scalp oils, and they contain antioxidants that fight free radicals from pollution, helping to strengthen and thicken hair. Seriously, who knew?

For the greatest nutritional benefits, leafy greens, like broccoli, kale and spinach, should be consumed raw or lightly steamed.

Include Healthy, Protein Rich Foods

Hair is made of protein, so ensuring you have enough protein in your diet is crucial for making it strong and healthy. If you are not consuming enough protein in your diet, your hair is likely to become dry, brittle and weak. Extremely low protein diets may also result in hair loss, and nobody wants that! Add a few servings of protein to your daily diet for stronger, healthier hair.

Examples of protein include chicken, turkey, fish, dairy products and eggs, along with vegetarian sources such as legumes and nuts.

Eat More Healthy Fats

Omega-3 fatty acids nourish follicles for stronger, shinier hair. Eat fatty fish like wild-caught salmon and albacore tuna. Incorporating avocados into your meals will also help fortify hair for stronger strands. So go ahead – order that extra serving of guacamole. Your hair will thank you.

Supplement Support System, S3 by MONAT

How about stepping things up a notch with a powerful, healthy hair supplement? Take your hair growth to the next level with S3 by MONAT! Each of the clinically proven ingredients found in S3 work together to replenish the body of possible nutrient deficiencies that could be contributing to hair loss. The best part? Winter-Proof Your Hair

Our top tips for keeping your hair
healthy & hydrated all season long

When the warm weather starts to cool, it’s important to be extra careful about keeping your hair hydrated. Can we all agree that dry hair isn’t cute…..at all?

When hair is dry, your scalp can become itchy, and your tresses can become more prone to breakage – and let’s face it – no one wants that!

Winter weather and other seasonal changes can leave your hair
feeling dry and damaged. Here, we’ve outlined the best advice
for helping your hair not just survive but
thrive this winter.

Start with a clean canvas.

Clear off crispy summer ends with a fresh new haircut. Not a fan of same length hair all over? Scared you’ll end up with a bowl cut?  Don’t fret! Texture is in! Carefully curated texture is much healthier than overdue split ends.

Make conditioner your best friend.

Going into the dryer months, your hair needs moisture. Prep hair with a moisture-rich shampoo and conditioner like the Balance Treatment System.

Washing your hair regularly with moisturizing products can help combat the damage dry winter air does to your hair and scalp.

Pro tip: Apply Rejuveniqe™ Oil Intensive from the mid-shaft down to coat each strand (for at least 10 minutes) with healthy hydration before you shampoo and condition your locks.

Step it up a notch with a hair masque.

Don’t be afraid of over-hydrating – even those with fine hair need moisture to prevent dull color and static. Incorporate the Replenish Masque into your weekly hair care routine for added moisture and vibrancy.

If your hair is on the greasy side, concentrate the treatment on the bottom half of your strands, focusing on the dry ends.

Deep conditioning treatments are also a great way to prevent and reduce hair static (dry hair is prone to static in the winter months because of the lack of moisture in the air).

Beware of toxic chemicals..

Chemical styling products are tough on hair any time of year, so use them with caution.

Color treatments, relaxers, chemical straighteners and curlers can dry out the hair and render it brittle and limp.

In some some people it can even cause permanent hair loss(YIKES!). Steer clear from toxic chemicals on this list, and instead opt for products that are non-toxic instead.

Finish in the shower with a cold water rinse.

A cold water rinse leaves hair glossy and oh-so shiny. It’s not make believe, it’s science! Colder temperatures in water constrict hair cuticles to make strands smoother and more reflective.

Cold water also prevents dirt from accumulating on the scalp and makes hair stronger.

So next time you wash your hair, finish your treatment off with a cold water rinse.

REJUVENIQE™ Oil Intensive

The science behind the proprietary formula

REJUVENIQE™ Oil Intensive’s exclusive ingredient is Abyssinian Oil. Abyssinian oil comes from the crambe abyssinica plant native to the Mediterranean and East Africa, and currently the oil is produced on Prince Edward Island in Canada.

Abyssinian oil is a 100% natural, non-gmo product.
This eco-friendly oil is fully biodegradable and free of any harmful additives.
Abyssinian Oil has a unique molecular structure that is not found in any other naturally occurring oil.

It has been shown to significantly improve the skin’s complexion and the hair’s luster through unique Omega 9 fatty acids composed of Erucic Acid, Oleic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Palmitic Acid and Stearic Acid.

In our search for a unique product unlike any other on the market, we began to meticulously engineer what has now become our signature blend. When it came down to buttoning up the formula for REJUVENIQE Oil Intensive, we chose Abyssinian Oil not only for it¹s remarkable rejuvenating properties, but also because of the way it is grown and processed. We are committed to ensuring our Abyssinian growers are using sustainable farming practices in their daily operations.

Where we source it from

We are committed to ensuring our Abyssinian growers are using sustainable farming practices in their daily operations. Farming these days is not a simple task, and many factors must be considered. All of our crops are grown on land with known, suitable cropping history and sustainable rotations with other crops. Abyssinian fields are identified and logged to provide a permanent record of previously grown and nurtured crops.

The production of healthy, viable Abyssinian relies on the planting of unmodified, high quality seeds. Through rigorous testing and evaluation, we select only the best hybrids available.

Oftentimes this method of producing multiple lots of seed allows us to personally choose the best seed available for producing the purest oil. We maintain and monitor all Abyssinian crops to ensure that there is no contamination with genetically modified organisms from other crops grown nearby.

How we’re giving back

Our production team is dedicated to moderating consumption of all natural resources through recycling, process improvements and innovations that minimize consumption while improving efficiency. We also give back a percentage of our profits to the farmers who grow and maintain our crops in the spirit of gratitude for our planet.
